The Challenge: Poor Speech Intelligibility in Large-Volume Learning Spaces
The university’s central academic block housed four massive, tiered lecture halls, each seating up to 350 students. Featuring high ceilings, hardwood row seating, and gypsum board walls, these spaces suffered from severe acoustic degradation:
Low Speech Intelligibility (STI): Professors’ voices became muddy and unintelligible by the time they reached the back rows. The long reverberation time caused a “cocktail party effect,” where background ambient noise drowned out the lectures.
High-Impact Wear and Tear: The lower sections of the walls (wainscot zone) were constantly subjected to heavy impacts from students’ backpacks, chairs, and accidental kicking. Standard fabric-wrapped fiberglass panels would quickly dent, tear, or sag in this high-traffic environment.
Strict Institutional Safety: Being a public educational facility, any wall cladding had to meet the absolute highest fire safety ratings and zero-VOC emission standards to protect student health.
| Educational Acoustic Metric | Pre-Renovation Status | Post-HENGJIU Installation |
| Speech Transmission Index (STI) | 0.42 (Poor / Exhausting to listen) | 0.78 (Excellent / Crisp articulation) |
| Reverberation Time (RT60) | 2.2 seconds (Severe echo) | 0.75 seconds (Perfect for lecturing) |
| Maintenance Cycle | Frequent repairs needed | Zero maintenance / Easy vacuum cleaning |
